Our story

The largest concentration of trained, benevolently inclined problem-solvers in human history has been placed permanently in the advisory seat. The Society exists to move them out of it.

Advice is the one form of input a decision-maker can ignore at no cost.

Scientists are selected for curiosity, trained in evidence, and socialised toward truth over advantage. Through a century of climate, energy, pandemic and machine-intelligence decisions, their role has been advisor: convened, consulted, thanked, and disregarded.

Part of it is caricature. The uncomfortable part is that most scientists genuinely were never taught how a discovery becomes a product, who holds capital and what they want, how to tell a story beyond a seminar, how to build a team, how to make the thing that carries the idea, or how to act before consensus arrives. That is not a personality defect. It is a curriculum gap, and it can be closed.

The claim

A Vanguard Scientist is a principal, not an advisor.

They do not hand the discovery off and hope somebody translates it. They own the full journey, from the finding to the funding, from the paper to the product.

Individually, a Vanguard Scientist is a formidable career. Several thousand of them holding real positions across capital, industry, media and policy is a different kind of object entirely, and it is the only version of this worth building.

Why a society

Society, not community.

You apply to a society. You pay dues to it. It has chapters, ranks, officers and a charter, and it expects something of you in return.

That is why everything a member is held to is published: the charter, the tenets, the rank criteria and the fees. Nothing about the Society is private.

Nine tenets

Published before anyone is asked to join. Breaching tenets 02, 03 or 05 can cost a member their place.

I · The work

Universal groundObservance is reserved for what holds everywhere.

Survivable outcomesWork is directed at the continued existence of humanity and the biosphere.

Full cost accountingNo output transfers its cost to the biosphere, a population, or an unrepresented future.

II · The practitioner

Ownership of outcomeThe Vanguard Scientist holds a position in the outcome. Advisory distance is declined.

Truth before persuasionNarrative, capital and influence never make a claim look better evidenced than it is.

Vanguard in body and mindMind and body are the instrument of the work, and are kept to its standard.

III · The society

Rank by demonstrationStanding derives from demonstrated outcome, never from fee, title, tenure or intent.

Mutual defenceMembers extend access, introduction and public support. A member under attack is defended.

TransmissionEach member owes instruction and time to those earlier in the progression.

150 places. Applications open on 28 October and close at midnight on 7 November, and the close will be honoured. The founding cohort keeps its entry rate for life, charters the first chapters, and builds the Society's first course alongside Dr Ben Miles.
